Arguably the most popular neighborhood in Denver, Washington Park (Wash Park) was developed initially as a new city park by Denver Mayor Thomas S. McMurray at the turn of the century. Drawn by the appeal of Smith Lake, McMurray purchased over 150 acres for the project and utilized the talents of Reinhardt Schuetze and John B. Lang for design and landscaping. Grasmere Lake was added as an additional water supply. When the streetcar line expanded to the south, it brought the potential for residential development with it. By the early 1930s, the boathouse and pavilion, both designed by J.J.B. Benedict, had been completed and residential construction was booming. Additionally, the shopping area on South Gaylord had become a well-established business center providing all the necessities for the new residents.
While the earliest architectural style of Wash Park homes is the Victorian, the brick bungalow is by far the most prevalent. Characterized by low-sloping roofs, wide front porches, and craftsman detailing, there are many blocks in the neighborhood that still exclusively feature this classic design. You don’t have to go far, however, to find examples of new construction rising up and modest bungalows and tudors getting facelifts in the way of a second floor! The beauty of Wash Park, the ideal central Denver location of the neighborhood, and the quaint shops scattered throughout (on Old South Gaylord, Virginia, and Pearl) make the Wash Park neighborhood one of the finest places to live in Denver.
